New Sustainability Supports Available for Montreal Hotels

GreenStep is proud to support a new suite of sustainable development initiatives launched by the Greater Montreal Hotel Association (GMHA) in collaboration with Tourisme Montréal. These programs are designed to accelerate the adoption of eco-responsible practices across the hotel sector in Montreal, a key hub for Canadian tourism.

Thanks to dedicated funding, GMHA members now have access to powerful tools and programs at 50% off to help integrate sustainability into their day-to-day operations. These initiatives provide hands-on support, data-driven insights, and globally recognized certifications that empower hotels to lead the way in sustainable hospitality.

Supporting Montreal’s Hotel Industry in the Shift to Sustainability

Here’s what’s included in the new support offering:

  • Hotel Eco-Efficiency Program
Hotels receive a full energy and environmental assessment, a customized action plan, and support in managing their Energy Star account. This ensures alignment with the City of Montreal’s energy reporting requirements while helping reduce energy consumption and costs.
  • Carbon Measurement and Water Program
A comprehensive analysis of GHG emissions (Scopes 1, 2, and 3) and water use provides hotels with a clear picture of their environmental impact and actionable recommendations to reduce it.
  • GreenStep Sustainable Tourism Pathway & Certification
Hotels can access GreenStep’s Sustainable Tourism Pathway or GreenStep’s GSTC-Accredited Certification, the only Canadian-based GSTC-Accredited certification program.
  • EcoFund Program
Hotels can also implement GreenStep’s EcoFund Verified program, which creates a self-sustaining green fund by adding a small voluntary contribution to guest invoices to support sustainability projects.

“The hotel industry has a key role to play in the socio-ecological transition of our destination,” says Dominique Villeneuve, President and CEO of GMHA. “With these new subsidized options, we aim to provide our members with concrete tools to reduce their environmental impact, improve energy performance, and meet travelers’ growing expectations for social responsibility.”

Tourisme Montréal, which recently achieved Platinum-level business certification —the highest level available— and silver-level destination certification, with the highest score to date – from GreenStep, has been instrumental in supporting this initiative. Their commitment to sustainable tourism reinforces Montreal’s reputation as an innovative and welcoming destination for both travellers and industry partners.

“By joining forces, we are helping to evolve industry practices toward a more responsible, innovative, and forward-looking approach,” says Yves Lalumière, President and CEO of Tourisme Montréal. “This initiative is part of our harmonious destination strategy, making Montreal a welcoming, efficient, and impact-conscious destination.”

A Model for Sustainable Tourism Across Canada

As the tourism industry continues to evolve, collaborations like this set a leading example for other destinations. GreenStep is honoured to support this movement, helping more hotels reduce their footprint, strengthen their performance, and align with global sustainability standards.
