About
McCord Stewart Museum is a public research and cultural institution located in downtown Montreal, Quebec, dedicated to the study and presentation of the social history of Montreal and Canada. Founded in 1921 and situated across from McGill University, the museum houses more than 2.5 million objects, photographs, documents, and works of art, including significant collections related to Indigenous cultures, fashion and textiles, photography, and material culture. Through exhibitions, research, and community programming, the museum explores the history, creativity, and diversity of Montreal’s communities while fostering dialogue on contemporary social issues.
The museum also integrates sustainability and social responsibility into its operations and programming. Its Sustainable Development Action Plan (2022–2027) focuses on responsible governance, social and cultural responsibility, and environmental stewardship, aligning institutional practices with broader sustainability goals. Initiatives include responsible procurement policies that prioritize environmentally and socially responsible suppliers, eco-design approaches that reuse exhibition materials to reduce waste, and the promotion of low-waste events. The museum also supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals and emphasizes inclusion, decolonization, and community engagement as part of its long-term sustainability vision.
