Tell us a bit about your business. What makes you different?
Nestled within British Columbia’s pristine Desolation Sound, north of Vancouver, Klahoose Wilderness Resort is an off-grid gem situated within the ancestral territory of the Klahoose Nation. This exclusive resort is wholly owned by the Klahoose First Nation, offering a unique haven for visitors seeking wildlife encounters, particularly the awe-inspiring grizzly bears, all within the comforts of an all-inclusive B.C. coastal wilderness retreat. What sets this resort apart is its commitment to authenticity and cultural enrichment. Guided tours and activities are led by Indigenous guides and cultural interpreters, who skillfully employ tourism as a means to illuminate the rich tapestry of the land’s history and the vibrant culture of the Klahoose people.
Why is sustainability important to you/your business?
The Klahoose Nation boasts abundant land, water, and cultural treasures, the stewardship of which has been passed down through generations. For millennia, Klahoose ancestors have diligently safeguarded these natural resources, demonstrating unwavering commitment to the environment and its inhabitants. Today, the Klahoose Nation actively promotes sustainability with tourism. This region now welcomes visitors to experience its breathtaking beauty through Grizzly Bear viewing and the Klahoose Wilderness Resort. In line with their enduring legacy, both enterprises are dedicated to preserving the environment, its wildlife, and precious resources for the benefit of all future generations.
Why did you join GreenStep Sustainable Tourism?
Our decision to become a part of Sustainable Tourism was of utmost significance to us. It has not only helped us maintain our unwavering commitment to our initiatives but has also provided us with a well-defined framework to pursue our goals. Through this platform, we have the opportunity to not only showcase our achievements but also collaborate with like-minded individuals and organizations. Together, we can ensure the preservation and sustainable operation of the breathtaking environment, here in the Klahoose Territory, a place we are fortunate to call home.
What sustainability related projects, policies or initiatives do you most want travelers to know about?
The conservation of both the ocean and the surrounding rainforest is of paramount importance to us. However, we recognize that the bond between the environment and its people is profound. Embracing visitors to our territory not only presents opportunities but also fortifies the foundation of modern life within the Nation, harmonizing with our community’s vision for the future. For example we have both elders and youth working together as cultural ambassadors each learning from each other as they share with visitors. The Resort is a testament to our commitment to uphold the cultural and traditional values of the Klahoose Nation while safeguarding our cherished territory and generating employment opportunities for the community. With the resort being remote and off-the-grid we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint in many ways, including our own micro hydro power system that powers the entire resort. Another way, is through fee collected from guests we also support wildlife conservation with organization like the Commercial Bear Viewing Association of BC.
What are some goals and/or actions you plan to take in the future to further increase the sustainability of your business?
Attaining Silver Certification is a significant milestone, but we are fully aware that there’s always room for improvement. Through our partnership with GreenStep, we gain access to their invaluable expertise, enabling us to develop innovative strategies to further reduce our environmental footprint. It’s important to emphasize that welcoming guests to our territory is a meaningful step in the journey of reconciliation, recognizing the role of travel as a catalyst for this important process that effects as all.
