Tell us a bit about your business. What makes you different?

Black Rock Oceanfront Resort has always been forward thinking. Our resort was built to blend into our surroundings.

Why is sustainability important to you/your business?

We live in a very small community and everything we do impacts it. We live on the edge of the Pacific Ocean with the rainforest as our backdrop. We have watched the climate change and know that we can, as individuals and as a business, make an impact.

Why did you join GreenStep Sustainable Tourism?

We know that the future of tourism is about sustainability. By joining GreenStep and Sustainable Tourism we are connecting with other like minded businesses and can learn from each other.

What sustainability related projects, policies or initiatives do you most want travelers to know about?

We are part of Veritree – replanting kelp when you opt out of Housekeeping Service. We use all locally made cleaning products that are natural. Our in room amenities are sourced here on Vancouver Island.

What are some goals and/or actions you plan to take in the future to further increase the sustainability of your business?

Our next steps are to really lower our energy use by implementing motion sensor lighting in our guest room hallways. Installing aerators on all of our taps to help reduce water use. We are in a renovation – all of the new appliances will be the most up to date energy efficient models.
